Phalaris arundinacea 'Feesey' (Strawberries and Cream) is a striking, low maintenance ornamental grass for large pots, borders and pond edges, grown peat-free in Wales.
Also known as reed canary grass, ribbon grass or gardener's garters. A UK native grass, and 'Feesey' is one of its brightest forms. It grows in upright clumps of white and green striped leaves that flush pink in spring and in cool weather, giving it the strawberries and cream look. Feathery pinkish-white flower plumes appear in June and July, fading to cream. Easy to grow in full sun or part shade and happy in any moist or even wet soil, including pond margins and boggy spots. Will grow 1 - 1.2 m tall. It spreads by underground runners, so it is best in a large pot, a contained bed or by a pond edge where it has room to roam. This plant dies back over winter and grows again in spring. Cut back the old growth in late winter. Plant out between spring and autumn. Propagate by division.
