Exotic Summer flowering ornamental grass - Great for tropical gardens - Frost hardy & easy to grow.

Also known as New Zealand Flax Plant. An exotic evergreen perennial reaching 1m in height and 1m wide. Phormium is a striking ornamental grass with wide sward shaped leaves.  In summer, established plants send up tall, dark plum-black stems that rise well above the foliage. Near the top, they branch into clusters of curved, tubular flowers in a rich rusty red, tipped with yellow-green. Rich in nectar, they're a magnet for bees and other pollinators, and they add a striking, architectural touch to borders, gravel gardens and tropical-style planting.Grows well in full sun. Cut back dead leaves in the spring. Grow in a pot to keep the plant compacted. Keep young plants protected from the frost by adding mulch to the base or bringing poted plants indoors.

Will look great in flower beds, borders, rockeries, pots and near ponds. Grows well in full sun or part shade. Can be grown outdoors or indoors.

Plant your Phomium in gritty well drained soil. It does not do to well in water logged soil.  Keep young plants moist during the dry season and protected from the frost in winter. Cut off any dead brown leaves in spring and cut spent flower stems right down.  Once the plant is established it's fairly low maintanance and drought resistant.
