RHS Award winning fruit shrub - Summer Red edible currents - Frost hardy

 

Native to west europe, redcurrents are grown as an ornmental shrub as well as for its edible red currents. It grows palmate green leaves with crenate rounded teeth. Redcurrent is a decideous shrub that will grow up to 1.5 m tall and 2 m wide.The  flowers are inconspicuous yellow-green, in pendulous, followed with red current berries in the summer. Grows best in full to part sun and will tolerate most soil types. Jonkeer Van Tets has received The Royal Horticulture Society Gold Merit Award meaning it is  a reliable plant. Please note redcurrents are toxic to dogs and cats if consumed.

 

Frost hardy -Deceidous Fruit Shrub

Currents: June - August

Height: Comes up to 20 - 30cm tall

2 Litre pot

Will look great in flower beds, borders pots or rockeries. Prefers a sunny sheltered position. Redcurrants can be grown outdoors or indoors in a sunny location.

To maintain your Redcurrent shrub, plant out any time between November - March. Grows well in most soil types and will do well in pots or in the ground. To increase crop Redcurrent prefers a shetered sunny area, but will also thrive in part shade. You may need to place your plant under a net or in a cage to prevent the birds from eating your redcurrents if growing spicifically for the redcurrents. Even though this is a frost hardy plant it will produce more if protected from late frost. Prune back into shape in the autumn once the redcurrents have passed.
