Rhus Typina grown for its tropical apearance, large red summer flowers followed with orange - red leaves and Autumn berries. Reaching 5 meters tall, Sumach is a deciduous, suckering plant. You will often find they grow in numbers together and can spread over time creating a fuller appearance. The leaf petioles and stems are densely covered in rust-colored hairs. The velvety texture and the forking pattern of the branches.The fruit of sumacs are edible. They can be soaked and washed in cold water, strained, sweetened and made into a lemonade -like drink called sumac-ade. The drink extract can also be used to make jelly. You can also grind the dried berries to make sumach poweder for food seaoning. The shoots can be peeled and eaten raw. All parts of the staghorn sumac, except the roots, can be used as both a natural dye and as a mordant. The Autumn leaves can also be dried and smoked.

Grows well in a sunny position in dry soil. Will look great in flower beds, borders, pots and rockeries.
Sumach is a generally low maintanance plant, however you may want to top it up with some fresh soil in the early spring to keep your plant healthy. Also trim back any dead branches in early spring, and cut back any unwanted suckers that pop up from the ground.
