Whistles in the wind - Summer pendulum flowers - Herbaceous shrub
Also known as Pheasant Berry, Elishas Tears, Cape Fuchsia and Grannys Curls. Native to the Himalayas and southwestern China. Leycesteria is an easy to grow shrub/herbaceous perennial with arching canes that produce dark purple drooping trumpet shaped flowers appearing in summer, followed by dark purple edible berries in Autumn. The leaves are cordate heart shaped with the stem in the centre.This plant also has medicinal uses. The hollow canes can also be used to make whistles and flutes and are commonly known as ghost flutes, because wind blowing through the plant will course a whistling sound. Grows up to 2.5 meters tall and 2.5 m wide. Will attract birds and bees.
